Laya Bharatam (Narada Gana Sabha)
A week long Thematic Dance festival organized by
'Natyarangam', the dance wing of Narada Gana Sabha,
Chennai from Aug 27 - 31, 2004. Dancers were
requested to interact with eminent Laya vidwans and
present a recital with special emphasis on Laya.
Sreedhars' worked with renowned mridingist Sri.Anoor
Ananthakrishna Sharma and performed on the inaugural day
of the festival. Great artistes and gurus of the
dance field including Smt.Kalanidhi Narayanan, Smt.&
Sri. CV Chandrashekar, Guru Parvathikumar, Smt.Savithri
Jagannatha Rao witnessed the performance and showered
high encomiums on the dance couple.

Invited by the Indian High Commission, early this year,
Sridhars’ along with their musicians toured Sri Lanka, the land of the Buddha.
Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with imposing statues of Buddha that humbles
and inspires one and all towards Buddha hood. Ever since the conflict, this was
the first cultural troupe in 12 years that visited Jafna. Shridhars’ were
welcomed by people in Jafna, and thanked them profusely for traveling all the
way from Colombo by road. It was commonly opined that the tour would go a long
way in bettering relationship between the countries in the future.
Sridhars’ participated in
the Republic Day Celebrations at the India House, in Colombo. They opine that
this was truly a very emotional moment for them. On the same day, in the
evening, they performed a short recital for the grand assembly of many
dignitaries at the India House. Among the many connoisseurs who attended the
performances were the Minister for Higher Education Prof. Wiswa Warnapala, and
Minister for Industries, Youth & Cultural Affairs, Sri V. Radhakrishnan,
The Indian High Commissioner Sri Ashok Kantha and his wife, MP of Jafna Sri Naklas Devanand, Mayor of Jafna Smt.
Yogeswari, Mayor of Kandy, Assistant High Commissioner Sri R K Mishra, Second

Ganesh and others.
Shridhars’ also performed
at Jafna, Batticoloa, Kandy, and Nuwara Elia. Everywhere they were received
very warmly and the programmes were much appreciated. The High commissioner and
his wife were extremely cordial and personally supervised the tour
arrangements. Mr. Asthana, Director of Indian Cultural Relations was the main
person in charge of the tour and he took lot of care to make the tour a
memorable experience for all the performers. Shridhars’ opine that it was a
pleasure performing for the Sri Lankans have great respect for Indian Culture
and many among the younger generation are taking to classical dance seriously.
